Ken's night taxis will mean
higher fares
Ken Livingstone today proposed an above-inflation rise in black-cab fares in an effort to encourage drivers to work at night.
The Mayor is keen to curb illegal touts who cruise the streets in unlicensed vehicles. Mr Livingstone says he has "some sympathy" with the argument that only an increase in fares will persuade more taxi drivers to work nights.
He proposes that Transport for London gives drivers an immediate 5.5 per cent increase in fares and allows them to make the changes necessary to increase night fares to a rate to be determined following consultation.
